$8 million in stolen vehicles seized at Port of Virginia in 2025
Customs and Border Patrol have seized $8 million in stolen cars at the Port of Virginia this year, $1.5 million more than when 13News Now last visited in July.
NORFOLK, Va. — Back in July, 13News Now took you along with U.S. Customs and Border Protection as they seized about $150,000 worth of stolen cars tied to international crime rings.
This week, that same team landed an even bigger bust. Once again, 13News Now was there.
CBP's Outbound Enforcement Team Chief Officer James Askew said this is a continued effort that never stops.
“I would say we’re pushing close to a million dollars worth of cars on the floor today," said Askew this week.
When 13News Now visited the facility in mid-July, $6.5 million in stolen cars had been seized so far in the fiscal year. Now, a month later, that number is north of $8 million.
Askew said the manifest this time around was mismatched, just like the last one.
“If they say it’s a Ford Escape, and we can clearly see it’s a Corvette, we know something’s wrong," said Askew.
Cars are typically targeted by international criminals through rental companies and dealerships. Thieves, using cash, fake names, and loans, buy time to offload cars overseas.
