Who Pays for Insurance Fraud? You do! $900 annually with yellow arrow going up

English | Español

Every year, the U.S. loses approximately $308.6 billion in insurance fraud, leading annual premium rates for policyholders to increase by an estimated $900*.

What is insurance fraud?

Insurance fraud is any deceptive action to gain an improper payment from an insurance company. This can range from consumers inflating damage caused during a storm to organized criminal actions like medical billing fraud and vehicle theft rings.

Help stop crime: report suspected insurance fraud

Drive down the cost of fraud by reporting what you see. By providing detailed information about a potential scheme, you can help NICB agents, insurance investigators, and law enforcement uncover fraud.

Consider these insurance fraud examples:

  • Following natural disasters, fraudulent contractors may attempt to claim their victims’ insurance benefits by promising work they never intend to complete
  • Medical professionals may participate in an organized mill, write unnecessary prescriptions, or bill for services that were not needed or never rendered
  • Predatory tow trucks swoop in while motorists are vulnerable and leave them on the hook for overinflated charges
  • Consumers exaggerate the cost of their insurance claims or submit repairs that did not result from a covered event

Remember, NICB combats fraud and does not address concerns about an insurance company’s service or rates. Direct any such issues to your insurance provider.
