A woman is being accused of engaging in health insurance fraud, potentially involving staged accidents, according to a Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO) report.
The woman, Ana Fonseca, 64, was taken into custody Thursday as she was accused of operating the Gonzalez's Medical Center, to scheme health insurance fraudulent claims and is now facing multiple charges, arrest report said.
MDSO detectives suspected illicit behavior when a man was contacted by his insurance company, Peoples Trust Insurance, to be interviewed about therapy bills related to vehicle accident injuries he supposedly sustained.
The insured stated that he had attended the clinic one time, on Feb. 12, for an X-ray examination and confirmed that he had been part of a traffic accident, but had not sustained any injuries nor pain from it, report stated.
The same day that he went for an X-ray, the man was told by Fonseca to pre-sign for nine days of therapy for injuries, the man clarified to Fonseca that he would not be in town, and that he only wanted an X-ray for "peace of mind," according to arrest report.
People Trust Insurance contacted Fonseca several times in order to contest the billing of the therapy treatment, to which the woman stated that the therapy had been performed to the man, even though he was out of town, MDSO reports.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at Gonzalez's Medical Center on Thursday, where they were able to find several documents that would indicate fraudulent behavior was taking place.
Later that day, officers showed up at Fonseca's residence where she was taken into custody without any incident and interviewed at the Hammocks Station.
Fonseca is now facing charges of false insurance claims, organized scheme to defraud, and grand theft of 3rd degree for billing People Trust Insurance $8,270.50, according to the arrest report.
