‘It affects everyone’: Virginia State Police sees spike in insurance fraud cases
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Virginia State Police is seeing a spike in insurance fraud cases across the Commonwealth, which First Sergeant Eric Futrell is investigating alongside his team.
“We’re trying to educate everyone out there to make sure that they don’t become a victim of insurance fraud,” said Futrell. “We do see cases where we have folks who will come in and lower their deductibles in their insurance and then report something that is taking place outside the parameters of their covered time period, and that is insurance fraud as well.”
Last year, Virginia State Police said more than 2,000 referrals were sent. Out of those referrals, 335 investigations were initiated, leading to 54 arrests.
Among the cases the agency tracks are staged car crashes.
